Rechargeable batteries- An extension to the lifetime of a battery

by Lisa

There are many people who buy rechargeable batteries without knowing the difference between them and the normal ones. One must know that there are various types of rechargeable batteries. The three main types are nickel metal hydride batteries, nickel cadmium batteries and rechargeable alkaline manganese batteries. Among the three a nickel metal hydride battery is the most expensive but t has the most energy storage capacity. The nickel cadmium batteries' storage capacity is placed between the alkaline manganese and the nickel metal hydride batteries. The rechargeable batteries like alkaline manganese have the lowest energy storage capacity and are also the lowest in cost.

The next thing to be considered is the use, whether it is going to be used for a torch, or for a camera, or in more advanced cases for a car. The devices that can run easily on low power can be operated by nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries.

Rechargeable batteries have to be recharged only with the use of the charge provided by the company. Any other charger put into use will reduce the life of the battery. Also placing the batteries within the device when not in use will make the charge of the batteries to be lost fast. Hence they have to be removed from the device and placed when not in use. It can be recharged only a particular number of times following which even they have to be replaced. Continuous use of the same pair of batteries will lead to the deterioration of the batteries and they tend to hold power for a lesser amount of time.

Some of the rechargeable batteries become unstable at higher temperatures and hence have to be stored in cool climates. The cadmium in the battery s reactive with heat and hence should not be exposed to fire conditions or kept near things that may catch fire. While using a rechargeable battery one must make sure that the battery is discharged at least completely once before placing on charge. Always keeping it on charge can reduce the shelf life of the battery. Last but not the least placing a battery continuously I the same place for a few months can cause them to leak and flow their content. This can be prevented by frequent changing of the places. One must make sure to take in all the above criteria before buying the products so that one can have a long life time for the battery.
